Guido Fawkes vs Tom Watson?

I don’t know what’s going on here, but it would appear that Guido Fawkes is taking Tom Watson, Labour MP for West Bromwich East, to court for something he said on his blog. All I have to go on is:

Notice : That Story That Was on Tom Watson’s Blog

…and now is not. That was a step too far in Blogwars.

Legal notices went out at 12.30.

If the BBC Radio 4 Profile on Guido is correct, his blog is offshore to prevent him being done for libel. If I understand things correctly, this is double standards of the worst kind from Guido; he has attacked Tom Watson for breaking the rules but won’t allow the same rules to apply to him.

I may, of course, be barking up the wrong tree. The major observer of Guido is Tim Ireland at Bloggerheads - I shall be interested to hear what he has to say in the morning.

xD.

Update: 12 Feb 2007 - the post I link to above has been taken down. How very interesting…

An anonymous poster put a link to what appears to be a copy of a Guardian article saying that one Paul Delarie-Staines, aka Guido Fawkes, tried, in the 80s, to promote a link between the Hull Federation of Conservative Students and the BNP. As I do not have any way of verifying this and in the interests of not libelling anyone, I am deleting that comment.

Dont think Guido has ever been to Hull - also have you not noticed he is Indian, generally not keen on the BNP?

  3. Anonymous Says:

So some unknown person could post on Guido’s blog that El Dave was a Nazi some such libel. Then Guido deletes the post but repeats the allegation. Nasty

Not my intent; if Guido asks me to remove that bit, I will do so. I would have thought, though, that the fact that I removed the link suggests that I am suspicious about the veracity of the report. I did specifically question it. If this were libellous, every time a newspaper repeated someone’s libellous comments, they’d be acting illegally. I’m sure people can take the point.

Anonymous 4.07pm - Guido posts this:

One Brownite sneered to Guido that “even if it does lose it’s charitable status, it won’t matter, Gordon will be PM by then.”

    Another reliable source?
