Microsoft admit Office is too expensive

Microsoft are offering a version of Office to South African consumers that can be rented on a monthly basis as the US$700 price tag is beyond the reach. No matter what the monthly rent (US$30), it will be more than the price tag of OpenOffice.org – zero.

xD.

Differential pricing is hardly a creation of Microsoft.

As for opensource, no one without a beard (and usually suspenders) will use it so who gives a crap?

No, but it illustrates how expensive Office is and, as things can easily be routed, moved around and so on, opens up a potentially problematic grey market for MS.

I freely admit that I have a beard. I do not have suspenders (do you mean braces?). I do use open source things (Ubuntu at home and Firefox and OpenOffice at work).

As to people who use it who don’t have beards – lots of websites are based on LAMP bundles – Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP.

Other people who use just the Ubuntu distro of Linux are Contact Air, the Wellcome Trust, Skegness Grammar and various parts of the governments of Castilla la Mancha and Andalusia in Spain and parts of the French and Belgian governments.

Had to smile at this, Dave. You know how much these things cost in Russia?

I’ve no idea how much it costs, tbh. Do enlighten me…
