Ah, my misunderstanding.

As I said, the price of good art is bad art; I think this qualifies as the latter.

My objections are as much about the pretentiousness and lack of understanding around Shibboleth as anything else; I also think that it will bring in fewer numbers to the gallery than previous exhibits in the Turbine Hall, which also has to count as a failure.

I can see how the idea of a crack might have been attractive in the same way as, say, Marsyas was, but it failed. It is important, though, that mistakes are seen retrospectively rather than risks not being taken. Perhaps to 'the price of good art is bad art' I should add 'but it's a price worth paying'.

xD.

Oh, sorry, I meant space in the Tate. By all means criticise away. I mean it's your blog after all.

While I agree with your last point, I think it does deserve space to criticise it; how else to point out its inadequacies?

I don't think that it's just a wrong interpretation, but a dangerous one because of its oversimplification.

xD.

'This work is a crack in the floor of the Tate...like RACISM is a CRACK in SOCIETY!'

I'm not sure if a work which illustrates such a simple concept in as ham-fisted way as this really deserves as much space as this.

I mean, I could not imagine a racist looking at this and going 'gor blimey! This will certainly make me rethink my opinions on multiculturalism!'.
