Welcome to davecole.org
I have just migrated my blog from unoriginalname38.blogspot.com to davecole.org and put it on the WordPress platform. I am endebted to Tomorrow’s Laundry for the blank theme onto which I added the formatting from Blogger. Do please take a look at the main part of the website, davecole.org, where I’ll be adding bits and bobs that may be of interest over time.
xD.

Dave, congrats. It looks great. Very minimalistic, yet warm. Easy to read yet intelligent — like your prose.
Is this on your own server? Tell us something about your hosting company experiences … I’m always unhappy with mine …
Btw, are you running Gutsy Gibbon these days?

Hey Erik,
It’s on a virtual private server hosted by midPhase. They’re recommended by WordPress, and I think for good reason. It’s US$80 for a year for more space than I could possibly use.
The tech support is remarkably good - they have an online thing that I’ve used twice and had useful responses within half an hour.
I’ve moved on to Gutsy. It’s pretty much the same as Feisty, but comes with Compiz by default. I’m not much into wizzy things, so I’ve turned off the desktop effects. The fast switcher is a good idea, too.
I bought a book on Ubuntu (much to Alice’s howls of derision) and am trying to learn a bit more Bash.
Thanks for the compliment
It’s very much a work in progress. Mostly, it’s fun to do. I do spend a bit too much time fiddling around with the code and not enough time writing posts. It’s also a bit of a hassle having to ask people to change their links and so on, but worth it.
On another note, do you know of anyone doing any work on the philosophy of open source? I was trying to find a book with the core docs like the GNU manifesto.
Dave,

Dave, that sounds interesting. I’m not very happy with my VPS and I’m paying quite a bit more than that. I’ll check them out.
I moved to Gutsy too but it didn’t work with a classroom projector and I moved back to Feisty again. I’m a bit disappointed that they didn’t bring out more glitzy novelties.
As for opensource philosophy etc, there is of course always Richard Stallman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stallman).

Depending on how purist you are about using open source stuff, you might find a driver for the projector in the multiverse repository that will let you use Gutsy.
