Single sex wards
Lord Darzi has said that single-sex wards are not possible:
“The only way we’re going to have single-sex wards within the NHS is to build the whole of the NHS into single rooms.
which, apparently, drew ‘an angry response’ from the Patients [sic] Association:
We want to see entirely single sex wards, not accommodation. Otherwise patients still have to share bathroom and toilet facilities with members of the opposite sex, and will have members of the opposite sex walking past them on their way to use these facilities.
Which I find bizarre in many ways. Does Katherine Murphy insist on a men-only and women-only bathroom in her home? I only ask because most wards I’ve seen have individual toilet units. Would Ms Murphy prefer that there were two waiting lists, one for men and one for women? Would she rather that money for surgical procedures was spent on putting up plaster walls? And what on earth is the objection to people walking past other people on the way to the toilet?
Single rooms would be preferable, but the costs are, at the moment, too high.
xD.
