Pascal’s wager and climate change

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

!– @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } –>
Pascal’s wager was deeply flawed as it either assumed that you could choose to believe or conflated belief with action. However, it has a useful application to climate change.
The wager is probably best explained with a simple table:

Believe (1)
Don’t Believe (2)

God exists (1)
Heaven
Hell

God doesn’t [...]

Antibathos

Monday, January 14th, 2008

BBC News 24 this evening has gone, antibathetically, from the ridiculous to the sublime. The ridiculous - deserving of ridicule - was footage of a parked car which might or might not have driven Kevin Federline, the estranged husband of Britney Spears, to a courthouse. Ms Spears might have been in the courthouse or, according [...]

Stop the War Coalition and Channel Four

Monday, January 14th, 2008

A group has been set up on Facebook called (in capitals, so it must be important) ‘Vote Stop the War Coalition for Channel 4 News Award’. It reads rather like the headlines of spam emails and the content of the group is similarly inaccurate. The award in question is ‘most inspiring political personality of the [...]

Parliamentary pay revisited

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

I am delighted that Matt Wardman and Garbo of the Poliblogs like my idea to set MPs pay once per Parliament and for it to be increased annually in line with an index. I favour the mean average of CPI and average wage increase, but I suspect the detail would be better left to a [...]

Photos from Paris

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Alice and I went to Paris shortly after New Year for a few days and had a lovely time. Although a bit cold, damp and grey, we thoroughly enjoyed it. A few photos follow below for your delectation. Clicking on a photo will bring it up full-size.

Video killed the radio star

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Tom Watson links to a fascinating article on Rolling Stone magazine’s website about the deleterious effects MP3s are having on the quality of music, both in terms of fidelity and whether it’s worth listening to at all. The article, which is worth reading in full1, essentially says that people want to make music with more [...]

Parliamentary pay

Monday, January 7th, 2008

The old chestnut that is MP’s pay has come around again. As I have said before, I find the Enoch Powell brand of politics somewhat distasteful, but there is at least one area where he may have been onto a good idea. Whenever a pay rise came round, he turned it down until he was [...]
