On the buses
A press release has come from Boris Johnson about the buses. This great, analytical missive runs:
Responding to London’s Transport Commissioner, who today stated that buses in London are safe, Conservative Candidate for Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:
“So City Hall says buses are safe places? You tell that to the people who have to travel on them every day. How many times a day does the Mayor’s transport supremo get on a bus?
“I will stop the lawlessness on London buses by introducing more uniformed officers and removing free travel from the under-18’s who abuse the privilege.
“This is yet another example of how the Mayor and his cronies are out of touch with everyday Londoners.”
Peter Hendy uses the buses regularly (see this article from the Guardian; the relevant words are on the second line). He was an LT graduate trainee.
I’d love to know (apropos of nothing) how many times a day Boris uses the buses. You see, he cycles places, so he can’t possibly know. And if he does take the buses everywhere, how does he know what’s going on with the tube? Or the trams? Or London Overground? There are hundreds of bus routes in London; many of the problems that do occur are outside of rush hours, when there are less people on the transport network. The press release is facile and, frankly, doesn’t sit well with Mr Cameron’s new politics; it is playing the person, not the ball.
