Quote of the week
At last night’s University Cogers, one of the speakers came up with a brilliant line that, given that religion is much discussed nowadays, seems apt to quote
“No man knows more of God than any other, though many believe they do.”
The Society of Cogers is the world’s oldest free speech society; it is in its two hundred and fifty-third year. The procedures of the Cogers differ significantly in many ways from those of the more famous debating societies found in the older universities. In the first place the meetings are smaller and the tone is very much less formal. Several topical issues are brought up for consideration during a single debate. No vote is taken at any time, so issues can be examined from many different points of view. There is more information at cogers.org.

Cogitators, cogers or codgers?

Cogers. It is supposed to come from the Latin cogitare (to think) but there is a suggestion that it may originally come from Coachers’ Hall, where the society first met. Apparently, Coachers’ Hall may have been the base of one of the Livery Companies, the Coachmakers & Coach-harness Makers.
