And the polls are open

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

As of five days ago, people in the USA, beginning with the state of Wyoming, will be voting for the next President; absentee ballots are accepted in Wyoming from forty days before the general election.
Following a decision by the Ohio Supreme Court, voters in that state, where absentee voting is possible from today, will be [...]

Eid mubarak (as today is Eid ul-Fitr) and shana tova (as Rosh Hashanah started yesterday evening).
xD.

Support abortion rights in Northern Ireland

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Via Stroppyblog, I see the Family Planning Association have set up a petition on the Number Ten site to extend the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland. The text reads:
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to extend the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland, and grant women there the same rights to abortion as [...]

Labour and the City

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I would urge any Labour party members connected with the City of London to heed this appeal from City of London BLP secretary (and NEC member) Peter Kenyon:
This is a call to all Labour Party members and supporters working in the City of London. City of London Labour Party would like to hear from you.
The [...]

The Tatler Ten revisited

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

I mentioned the Tatler Ten a little while ago. Imagine my surprise to tune into the Tory party conference to see Jeremy Brier on stage, having a chat with Alan Duncan, George Osborne and someone I didn’t recognise, only to then see Kulveer Ranger appear in the next segment.
xD.

England Expects in silence

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Via Mr Eugenides, I see that a blog, England Expects, written by a press officer, Gawain Towler, for the European Parliament Independence and Democracy Group, which includes UKIP, has been effectively shut down.
While it appears he may have been in a technical breach of the rules, I would submit that the rules appear to be [...]

Oyster on mobiles

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Building Oyster technology into mobile phones seems like a good idea. Just about everyone is permanently wedded to their phone. However, I have a couple of slight issues with it. Just about everyone also always carries their wallet or purse and an Oyster card - the size of a normal credit card - is hardly [...]

The GOP on bailouts

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

“We do not support government bailouts of private institutions. Government interference in the markets exacerbates problems in the marketplace and causes the free market to take longer to correct itself,” -
Republican Party Platform, 2008.

Best viewed with Firefox

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

I am fairly confident that the HTML behind this blog is compliant with the W3C standards. However, if you use Internet Explorer, the layout is thrown all over the place. Firefox and Opera both display the blog correctly. I do actually think that the problem is with IE and not my HTML.
Take back the web [...]

Greetings from the Czech Republic

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

I’m currently in Ostrava, an industrial city in Moravia-Silesia near the border with Poland. Ostrava is twinned with Coventry, from where a lot of my family come.
Architecturally, the city is unlovely; there used to be a lot of heavy industry, particularly coal mining, and the marks of Communism in the buildings are everywhere. Although as [...]
