A bill for the more effective prevention of unicorns

At the start of every new Parliament, a pro forma bill is introduced before the debate on the Queen’s Speech. This tradition allows for the Commons to demonstrate its independence by choosing what to debate and when to debate it; the mere remarks of a reigning monarch will be dealt with when the Commons is good and ready.

The same bill has been introduced, only missing out two years in the seventeen-forties, since 1727; it is the Outlawries Bill or, to give it its full title, A Bill for the more effectual preventing clandestine Outlawries. The equivalent in the Lords is A Bill for the better regulating of Select Vestries.

These are outdated bills based on outmoded ideas that are merely introduced to remind us of the battles fought for the freedoms we now enjoy. To that end, I very much support the idea of introducing A Bill for the more effective prevention of unicorns. Unfortunately, Nadine Dorries thinks one needs to be introduced.

xD.
