A little shameless self-promotion

Friday, January 29th, 2010

But I think it’s justified.
A couple of days ago, I saw this tweet from John Prescott:
Good idea. Anyone? RT @Johnny_Seven not sure if its been done yet but a Go Fourth twibbon for followers would be a fantastic addition
So I made one. You can add it to your Twitter profile by visiting twibbon.com/join/Go-Fourth.
And JP has [...]

France and the burka

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

How do you feel about the burka?
France is more than a little negative.
To be perfectly honest, I don’t know. I see the argument that some women are being forced to wear the burka, directly or indirectly, and that this is an affront to our sense of liberty and justice. I also see the argument that [...]

The marriage bonus and the Social Attitudes Survey

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

The findings of the British Social Attitudes Survey make interesting reading, particularly in light of the off-again, on-again proposal from the Conservatives to privilege marriage in the tax code. Needless to say, I think it’s a bad idea, but I wonder how much traction it would actually have with people.

Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o’ a grace
As lang’s my [...]

Pat Robertson and Haiti

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

I’ve been a bit quiet on the blogging front of late. Work and so on means that I haven’t had enough time to keep up with blogs, let alone write on my own. I have, though, started making some YouTube videos. They’re not going to win any awards, but I enjoy doing them.
You may have [...]

Here be dragons: an introduction to critical thinking

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Brian Dunning does one of my favourite podcasts, Skeptoid, dedicated to furthering knowledge by blasting away the widespread pseudosciences that infect popular culture. Brian has produced a short, forty-minute film that “offers a toolbox for recognizing and understanding the dangers of pseudoscience, and appreciation for the reality-based benefits offered by real science.” I thoroughly recommend [...]
